Chapter Sixteen
Jack bent at the waist as he worked his way down the hill, making sure to keep the house between him and the rocks up on the hill. It was getting darker, but the moon was out and gave enough light that someone might take a shot. But as he slid down the bluff to the creek bed, he couldn’t pull his mind away from the woman he had left behind in the cabin.
The way she smelled of soap and fresh dough. Or the way her sweet laugh tied him up inside. Pulling him away from every other thought.
Careful, he told himself as he began to work his way upstream, always being sure to keep the bluff of the creek between him and the rocks.
He needed to keep focused. He didn’t have time to think about Jenny and how pretty she looked in the morning sun. Or how her smile made him feel as if all was right with the world. No, he had a man to find and nothing could get in his way.
Forcing the daydreams aside, he thought about the man who had shot at him. It wasn’t Cooper. He didn’t have the patience. Cooper was one of those people who barreled into a problem. He wasn’t the type to sit on a hill through the hot afternoon sun, waiting for an opportunity.
He doubted it was either of his cowhands. They preferred pistols. They’d have rode in and confronted him directly.
No, the man up there had been hired specifically for this purpose. A professional. There were several in the west. Stories were shared around campfires about such men. Nothing could be proven. But when they showed up in a town. People had a habit of disappearing. Sometimes the body was found, but often not until long after the animals had been at it.
A killer. It wasn’t personal with this man. It was a job. That meant he wouldn’t take risks to achieve his goal. He’d want to stand off and take out his target. The shot from the rocks that took Parker had been good, but not too difficult. Jack knew men in the army who could have done better.
But that didn’t matter. If he could get close enough without the man knowing, he could take him out. And he knew just the place.
Jack worked his way up the creek until he was well past where a man in the rocks could see him in the moonlight then crouched low as he ran for the forest. Once there, he stopped to catch his breath and to listen in the night as he let his eyes adjust to the darkness of the forest.
The wind ruffled the pines, and something scurried through the dry grass ahead of him. A rabbit, or mouse.
Still, he listened, frozen in place until he was sure he was alone, then, darting from tree to tree he made his way up the ridge until he turned to come up behind the man. This was where the moccasins were needed.
